There are many things that you may feel like you need an escape from these days. The major one is, of course, the pandemic and the lockdowns, loneliness, and potential depression brought on by said pandemic. Not all people fall into that category, though many of us do. And the pandemic might not be the only thing that someone might need an escape from these days.
Bad things can (and do) still happen that have no connection at all with the pandemic. For example, maybe a loved one dies from a disease not related to Coronavirus at all, maybe you were negatively impacted by one of the weather-related events of the world, maybe you are just losing it because your basic medical care has been put on hold. OK, that last one is related to the pandemic, but I think you see what I mean that not all bad things are because of Coronavirus. Sometimes the escape we need is from life itself.
Now I am not a psychologist, so I can only tell you some things that work for me and maybe they will work for you as well and help you feel a bit of an escape.
One thing that helps me forget about the problems of the world is building something. Now I don’t mean like big physical things like a new system of shelves for the kitchen or a homebuilt computer (although those would be nice and serve as a distraction for a good while!), the kind of things I’m thinking of are maybe a website, an app or something else electronic. Something that can be built using your brains and your imagination.
As I said, building a new system of shelves for the kitchen would be nice, but there is likely no way I could do that because of my disability. It would cause way too much frustration and possibly pain, because building things using hammers and saws is not exactly my forte. But to build a website, I can be sitting in my wheelchair, at my desk, typing on my keyboard.
And that brings me to another means of possible escape: learning something new. In this case programming language for the computer. It is very exciting to learn all the things that can be done with, say, javascript. And if javascript doesn’t get you excited, there are plenty of other programming languages.
Writing is another means of escape. This could be either fiction or nonfiction. Something short like a blog or long like a book. And speaking of books, reading is definitely an escape. It’s so easy to find yourself completely immersed in a good book no matter the format, printed page, phone, some type of e-reader, or even a computer.
Well, those are a few tools I use to escape. Maybe one or more will work for you as well. Good luck.
